Dark Stack was born to be our "third place": a meeting point outside home and work (or college) to code, learn, teach, and grow.
For this to work, we need a solid foundation of respect. This document is not just bureaucracy; it's our README.md as a community. It's what we expect from you and what you can expect from us.
The Dark Stack Way (What we expect)
We want to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing a "hello world" or a complex kernel project. To that end, we ask that you:
- Be someone's "Hello, World!". Remember what it was like to start. If you see a beginner with a question (even if it seems obvious), be welcoming. Help create a place where no one is afraid to ask "what is an array?".
- Code and let code (with respect). Treat everyone with respect. Code criticism is about the code, not about the person. Constructive feedback is gold; personal attacks or unnecessary sarcasm are not.
- Collaborate, don't compete. The spirit here is open source. Be open to new ideas, give and receive feedback. We grow together.
- Think before you type. If you're in doubt whether something might be offensive, it's probably better to rephrase or not say it.
The Dark Side (What we don't tolerate)
To be very clear, we have a zero tolerance policy on harassment. There's no "but", there's no "it was just a joke".
Unacceptable behaviors include (but are not limited to):
- Offensive comments about gender, sexual orientation, disability, appearance, race, religion, or experience level.
- Use of sexualized, pornographic, or inappropriate images or language.
- "Trolling", deliberate intimidation, stalking, or systematic harassment.
- Deliberately disrupting discussions or events.
- Unwanted contact or inappropriate sexual attention.
- Publishing other people's private information without permission (doxing).
- Anything that violates the Strictly Prohibited Activities in our Terms of Use.
What happens if... (Enforcement)
We're not fans of the "ban-hammer", but we take this code seriously.
- If you break this code, you can expect a (private) conversation with the moderation team.
- Depending on the severity, actions may range from a formal warning, through content removal, to temporary suspension or permanent termination of your account.
The final decision rests with the moderation team, which is committed to acting fairly and consistently.

Moderation can't see everything all the time. The community also helps to self-police.
